Overview
The Amazon Manu Cultural Zone 3 Days is a wildlife and nature expedition from Cusco into the cultural zone of Manu National Park — one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet. You travel overland across the Andes and down through the cloud forest, then continue by motorized boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River, sleeping in comfortable jungle lodges and looking for the Cock-of-the-Rock, monkeys, caimans and parrots along the way.
It's built around wildlife watching, not trekking: short, easy walks on forest trails, a silent catamaran-raft outing on a jungle lake, and an early-morning visit to a parrot clay lick. You're guided throughout by experienced naturalist guides with binoculars and telescopes, supported by a boat crew and a jungle cook. The trip runs as a small group (max 10) and includes road and river transport, lodges, meals and guided activities.

Cusco → Cloud Forest → Paucartambo → Pilcopata Lodge
We pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 am in comfortable private transport to begin the journey into the Amazon basin. Our first stop is the Chullpas de Ninamarca (3,750 m), ancient pre-Incan funerary towers, before we reach the colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its folklore and well-preserved colonial bridge. We then ascend to the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m), the official entrance to Manu National Park.
As we descend we enter the misty cloud forest, stopping to walk scenic trails among orchids, heliconias, ferns and towering trees. This is the perfect place to watch the spectacular Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru's national bird, performing its mating ritual — with luck you may also spot trogons, quetzals and the elusive Spectacled Bear. By late afternoon we reach the village of Pilcopata (550 m) and settle into our jungle lodge just outside town, with private rooms, bathrooms and showers.
Good to know: Breakfast on day 1 isn't provided because of the early start — have a light breakfast before pick-up. You drop from cold Andean passes (4,000 m) into warm, humid jungle in one day, so pack light layers and rain protection.

Pilcopata → Atalaya → Machuwasi Lake → Paititi Lodge
After breakfast at the lodge we continue with a 45-minute bus ride to the port of Atalaya (490 m), where we board a motorized boat for a scenic 30-minute ride along the Alto Madre de Dios River, watching for colourful birds, monkeys and other forest dwellers. We arrive at Paititi Lodge, a cosy jungle lodge with private rooms, bathrooms and showers, which is our base for the night.
After a freshly prepared lunch, in the afternoon we explore the magical Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi) aboard a traditional catamaran raft, gliding silently across the calm water. Look for the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin (Shansho), monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, insects and — with luck — capybaras, the largest rodents in the world. In the evening there is an optional night walk to discover species that only emerge after dark, before spending the night at Paititi Lodge under the stars.
Good to know: The optional night walk is the best chance to see nocturnal wildlife — bring a head-torch and insect repellent. Mornings and the lake are quietest for wildlife, so move slowly and keep noise down.

Paititi Lodge → Parrot Clay Lick → Cloud Forest → Pilcopata → Cusco
We start very early with a 45-minute boat ride along the river to reach the Parrot Clay Lick — a natural clay wall rich in salts and minerals. Here you witness an incredible spectacle as hundreds of green parrots, representing three to four different species, gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay that helps them neutralise toxins and aid digestion. Afterwards we return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before beginning the journey back to Cusco.
We navigate by boat back to Atalaya, then continue by private bus, retracing our route through Pilcopata (550 m), Patria and Chontachaca, once again passing through the enchanting cloud forest with its lush vegetation and possible final glimpses of wildlife. We expect to arrive back in Cusco between 6:30 and 7:00 pm, bringing this unforgettable Amazon rainforest adventure to a close.
Good to know: The clay lick is a dawn event, so the early start is worth it. It's a long travel day back to Cusco by boat and road — keep a layer handy for the cool cloud forest on the way up.
What Wildlife Might I See?
This is a nature-watching expedition, so sightings are never guaranteed — but the cultural zone of Manu is exceptionally rich, and across the cloud forest, the river and the lake you have a strong chance of seeing:
- Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana) — Peru's national bird, watched at a cloud-forest lek as the males display.
- Parrots at the clay lick — hundreds of green parrots of three to four species gathering at dawn to feed on mineral-rich clay.
- Monkeys & lake wildlife — monkeys, the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin (Shansho), reptiles, dwarf caimans and, with luck, capybaras around Machuwasi Lake.
- Birds of the cloud forest — trogons, quetzals and other exotic species, and with real luck the elusive Spectacled Bear.
Wildlife is wild and free — your naturalist guide uses binoculars and a telescope to find and show as much as possible, but exact sightings vary by season, weather and luck.

This is an all-inclusive small-group expedition with a single, fixed rate. There are no separate adult, student or child prices and no return-option surcharge — everyone pays the same from $290 per person.

What to Pack
You're going from cold Andean passes into warm, humid lowland jungle in a single day, so pack light, breathable layers plus rain and insect protection. Rubber boots are provided at the lodge.
- Always with you: original passport, some cash in soles (for drinks, snacks and tips) and any personal medication.
- Clothing: light long-sleeved shirts and trousers, a waterproof jacket or poncho, a hat and a swimsuit, plus a warmer layer for the cool cloud forest.
- Extras: insect repellent, high-SPF sunscreen, a head-torch for the night walk, binoculars if you have them, a reusable water bottle and a camera.

In authentic jungle lodges — night 1 at a lodge just outside Pilcopata and night 2 at Paititi Lodge by the river. Both have private rooms with bathrooms and showers, and there are private or shared bathroom options. Filtered mineral water is available at the lodge.
